“The Handmaid’s Tale”

Last summer my mom watched the show “The Handmaid’s Tale” and was absolutely obsessed. She has been begging me to watch it so we can watch it together when the next season comes out and I finally started it. The show is very intriguing. Once you start it, you won’t be able to stop.

While watching I have picked up on many aspects of the show are similar to the book 1984 by George Orwell. The show is a dystonia that takes place in the United States. The government has been taken over by a totalitarian government. 1984 is a dystonia in which The Party takes over a government. They are both cautionary tales about the future. Aspects of 1984 are seen today such as surveillance and the large advance of technology. Surveillance is also prevalent  in “The Handmaid’s Tale. There are eyes that watch the handmaid’s every move. They can’t get away with anything without being seen. In 1984 the people of Oceania are watched and listened to constantly by Big Brother. Another thing that is similar is that the people that try to rebel get punished in order to become a better person. In 1984 Winston and Julia try to rebel against the government. They get caught and are put into jail. They are tortured until they respect the government and big brother and until they have no more thoughtcrime. In one of the most recent episodes of the show the handmaid’s were being forced to stone another handmaid. They refused to do this. They were tortured to make sure this did not happen again.

Other aspects of this show are not seen so much today but have been seen in the past in very extreme cases. The handmaid’s in the show are treated in a very inhumane way. The handmaid’s names are changed. The main character’s real name is June but she is referred to as Offred to dehumanize them. In the holocaust this is done: peoples were referred to as numbers rather then there names. People are killed by stoning and hanged for poor behavior.

The Handmaid’s are used to have children for couples that are unable to. The women are subjected to rape. If they fight against it or do something that they are not suppose to, they get punished. The women are tortured and have no escape. Rape is such a prevalent topic today. Many rape stories are coming out from years ago and many big figures are being accused of rape. Today rape something that we just push to the side. It is very frowned upon and is not okay. It’s terrifying think that at one point this can just be a thing that is okay to do. No one in the show tries to stop it from occurring. They just let it happen as if it was a normal thing.

If you are looking for a new show to watch, I would 100% recommend watching this!
