Podcast Choice #2

I started to listen to the podcast “Skimm’d From The Couch” which was founded and hosted by Carly Zakin and Danielle Weisberg. This podcast series takes a look at the realities of women’s work lives and the successes and failures of their lives. Each episode, a different woman is invited on the show for an interview.

On the first episode Carly and Danielle brought Whitney Wolfe Herd on to talk with them. Whitney is the founder and the CEO of Bumble, an online dating website which allows the woman to make the first move. Before she creating Bumble, she was a co founder of Tinder. She believes that being an entrepreneur means that you want to solve a problem. When she was creating a company in college she was out to solve a problem that no one had before. She had a large falling out with Tinder. This was when she decided that there needed to be a change. She was so upset with all the posts about her and did not understand how someone without a support system could deal with hate like she experienced. It is so important to have people that support you. To build on the support systems she created Bumble BFF, which is to find friends. She discussed how she deals with her failures. She tells everyone that there is really nothing you can do about failing. It is something that happens to everyone. You have to use it to your advantage to help you improve and learn from your mistakes. In order to be successful, you need to fail sometimes.

In the second episode Tina Brown was brought in for an interview. Tina has written and edited many books in the past. Now was is the founder and CEO of Tina Brown Live Media. Carly and Danielle were very inspired by how well she was able to get her career going and how confident she was in what she was doing and what she wanted to do. She was able to do this because she was creative. She started up her business with her friends. She writes about people in her life. People are sometimes offended by what she writes but she tells these people that it was things  that she had thought in the moment. When Carly worked for Tina she was impressed by how well she brought the team together. Tina learned from working with Harvey Weinstein that you need to be in control and be the boss in order to not get bullied.

I really enjoy listening to this podcast series. The stories about these women’s careers and their success is very interesting and inspiring.
